Sketch Series 3

'just' white lights

The use of white lights in these two opposing scenes is interesting. The light bulb is hidden, but the glow from its source is strong. They both have a purpose to lead the eye to an emotional focal point in the space.

DAYLIGHT Model

Sketch Series 4

Installation: Incandescent, task lighting (Residential)

  a. Study room used to do work on a computer, read and write.  Also, a video game room for watching television and playing games.
  b. Lighting is used to illuminate the space when daylight is not useful.  Task lighting is the only source of artificial light in the space.  It is mainly used for work done in the desk space.
  c. The luminaire is a silver metal desk lamp, that has a flexible lamp.
  d. This one light source in the space is at times harmful on the eye.  If on for a long period of time, it causes strain on the eye b/c of its closeness to eye level.  If standing this lamp is not very useful unless rotated upward.
  e. This light source causes color to look really bright.  Holding different fabrics under the light allows its true colors to shine.
  f. The level of illumination in this space is inappropriate and poor.  It does not illuminate above desk level.  Also, the amount of light from this source is high but it does not filter through the space enough to cover all.
  g. To improve the lighting environment a taller lamp would be necessary or even a ceiling light.  A general light source is necessary for this space.

Installation: Fluorescent, task lighting (commercial)

  a. This space is an office used to watch surveillance cameras of a department store.
  b. The purpose of lighting is to illuminate the space, considered general lighting.  But its mainly to make the control panels and work surface visible along with illuminating the space.
  c. The luminaire is made from metal, it is suspended about 3 ft. from the cables.  The face of the luminaire is cage like, allowing as much direct light as possible while a panel is on the back side not allowing light into the above ceiling.  This panel reflects light back into the space and creates a shadow on the wall.
  d. Light in this space is a bright white.  It does not cause any glare on the monitors in the space, and limits shadow below.  But the luminaire creates a shadow on the wall.  Because the luminaire is very high this shadow does not effect the physical space below where people operate.
  e. The light source causes two effects on colors, colors closer to the light source are brighter in hue and more intense while colors further from the source have less intensity and more saturation.
  f. This illumination level is appropriate because it does not cause too much strain on the eye with an overwhelming amount of light.  It creates visibility for the necessary tasks in the space and is not distracting for the users who occupy the space for several hours at a time.
  g.  Using more of a white lamp would improve the lighting environment.  A different type of light fixture that creates more direct light to the areas where surveillance is watched, would also create a better lighting environment because it would lessen the strain on the eye from the lack of light at desk level in the space.

Installation: HID lamp, task lighting, (commercial)

  a. This space is a warehouse used to house large packaged products.
  b. The lighting is mainly general, because it creates visibility for a numerous amount of functions within the space.  Lighting is up and down each aisle to create visibility for egress as well as stocking the shelves, or seeing what product is where.
  c. The luminaire is a half circle, glass fixture suspended from the ceiling by a cable.
  d. The light source is very bright.  It creates a glare on the floor material, because it is a glossy concrete.  On the materials the light creates a glare as well because the packages are a white plastic.  While the lights have these effects they do lessen the amount of shadows in the space.
  e. There aren't many colors in the space, and the lights create a glare on white due to the type of glossy material.  The grey concrete has a glare as well from the direct HID lamps.  Red is the only other color in the space that stands out from the others, and it is bright as well.  These lamps make the red look very pure and defined in the space.
  f.  The light level is appropriate in this space.  It allows the users visibility from every angle doing all the necessary tasks.
  g. One improvement to the lighting enviroment would deal with the floor material.  To create less of a glare, I would recommend a more coarse concrete.

Week 3 (Sketch Series 1)

Feb. 21

Time: 10:30 am

It becomes more evident which side constantly receives more sunlight. The side that receives more sunlight is the social area at the indoor pool.

From observation the lawn chairs and tables are only on the side that receives the sunlight. I assume people mainly swim on this side as well, since I have yet to observe anyone in the pool.
